Hadamard maximal determinant problem

What is the largest possible determinant of an n×n matrix with entries in {-1, +1}? Hadamard matrices, when they exist, achieve the upper bound, but for many n the maximum is unknown.

Construction and existence of Hadamard matrices of all orders divisible by 4 is itself a famous open conjecture, central to combinatorial design theory.
