How can we make concrete carbon-neutral?

Category: Engineering

Status: Queued

Cement production accounts for about 7-8% of global CO2 emissions, primarily from the calcination of limestone. Alternative chemistries (geopolymers, CarbiCrete), CCS-equipped kilns, and supplementary cementitious materials each address part of the problem.

Whether any approach can match Portland cement's combination of cost, scale and durability is unresolved.
