Can the Indus script be deciphered?

Category: History

Status: Queued

The Indus Valley civilisation (c. 3300–1300 BCE) left behind thousands of short inscriptions on seals and pottery. No bilingual text exists, the underlying language is unknown, and even whether the script encodes a spoken language is debated.

Statistical analyses by Rao and others suggest linguistic structure, but a generally accepted decipherment is not yet in sight.
