Are there universal features of human languages?

Category: Linguistics

Status: Queued

Greenberg-style typology identifies broad statistical tendencies across languages, but exceptions exist for almost every proposed universal. Whether deep structural universals (Universal Grammar) exist, or whether observed patterns reflect cognitive and communicative biases, is disputed.

Computational and cross-linguistic corpus work continues to test specific proposals.
