Can we predict earthquakes?

Category: Earth Science

Status: Queued

Despite decades of effort, short-term, deterministic earthquake prediction (location, magnitude, time window) remains beyond current science. Statistical seismic hazard estimation can give decadal probabilities; precursor signals are inconsistent.

Whether reliable short-term prediction is in principle possible — or whether earthquake systems are inherently unpredictable above a threshold — is debated.
