How will the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation change?

Category: Environmental Science

Status: Queued

The AMOC redistributes heat from the tropics to high northern latitudes. Observations suggest it has weakened, and models predict further weakening under warming. Whether a collapse is plausible this century, and what regional consequences it would have, is contested.

A 2023 Nature Communications paper estimated a possible collapse between 2025 and 2095, but the estimate is widely debated.
