What is the neural basis of consciousness?

Category: Neuroscience

Status: Queued

Subjective experience appears to arise from physical processes in the brain, but no theory yet identifies the specific neural correlates necessary and sufficient for consciousness. Global Workspace Theory, Integrated Information Theory and Higher-Order Theories make different predictions.

Recent adversarial collaborations have begun to test these against one another in human subjects, but resolution is not yet in sight.
