Can we cure Type 1 diabetes?

Category: Medicine

Status: Queued

Type 1 diabetes is caused by autoimmune destruction of insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells. Replacement insulin therapy is life-saving but does not restore normal physiology.

Recent trials of stem-cell-derived islet transplants (Vertex, ViaCyte) have produced insulin independence in some patients, but require immunosuppression. Whether a scalable, immunosuppression-free cure is achievable is open.
