What sets the upper limit of the periodic table?
Category: Chemistry
Status: Queued
Heavier and heavier superheavy elements have been synthesised — the most recent confirmed addition being oganesson (Z=118). Theory predicts an 'island of stability' near Z≈114-126 where some isotopes may have lifetimes of seconds to years.
Whether such isotopes can be produced experimentally, and the ultimate limit set by relativistic effects and nuclear stability, are open questions.
