How does information escape a black hole?

Category: Physics

Status: Queued

Hawking's calculation suggests that black holes radiate thermally and evaporate, apparently destroying the information of whatever fell in. But unitary evolution in quantum mechanics forbids information loss. This is the black hole information paradox.

Recent work on islands and the Page curve from holography suggests the information is preserved via subtle entanglement effects, but a complete, model-independent resolution is not yet in hand.
