How to make jet aviation carbon-neutral?

Aviation accounts for ~2-3% of global CO2 emissions and a comparable amount of warming via contrails. Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), hydrogen propulsion, electric or hybrid aircraft, and contrail mitigation are all under development.

Whether any single approach can scale to replace fossil kerosene at industrial scale, while remaining cost-competitive, is an unsolved engineering and economic problem.
