Can we build a space elevator?

Category: Engineering

Status: Queued

A cable from Earth's surface to geostationary orbit could transport payloads to space at a fraction of rocket costs. Carbon nanotube tensile strength would suffice in principle, but no material currently produced at scale meets the requirements.

Open engineering questions include cable construction, climber mechanisms, debris avoidance, and the legal status of such a megastructure.
