What happened to the Roanoke colonists?

In 1587, English settlers established a colony on Roanoke Island. When relief ships returned in 1590, the colony was empty, with only the cryptic carving 'CROATOAN'. What happened to the 115 colonists has never been determined.
Theories include assimilation with the Croatan or Lumbee, starvation, attack by other tribes, and disease. Recent archaeological work has produced ambiguous results.
