What was the Antikythera mechanism used for?

Category: History

Status: Queued

Recovered from a shipwreck off Antikythera in 1901 and dated to roughly the 2nd century BCE, this geared bronze device modelled astronomical cycles with surprising sophistication. Imaging since 2005 has revealed inscriptions and gear trains in detail.

Whether it was used for teaching, astrological prediction, calendar calibration, or some other purpose — and how widespread such devices were in antiquity — remains debated.
