Is recursion the unique feature of human language?
Category: Linguistics
Status: Queued
Hauser, Chomsky and Fitch (2002) proposed that recursion is the single computational property distinguishing human language from animal communication. Everett's work on Pirahã questioned whether recursion is universal; Nevins, Pesetsky and Rodrigues (2009) contested those claims.
The empirical and theoretical status of the claim remains actively debated.
