How will permafrost feedbacks unfold?

Permafrost contains roughly twice as much carbon as the atmosphere. Warming releases CO2 and methane, which warm further. The size and timing of this feedback are uncertain.

Open issues include the role of abrupt permafrost thaw (thermokarst), microbial controls on methane emissions, and the partitioning between gradual and sudden carbon release.
