Equities have historically returned 6-7 percentage points above safe assets in real terms — far larger than standard preference parameters can justify. Mehra and Prescott's 'equity premium puzzle' is unresolved 40 years later.

Proposed resolutions include rare disasters, habit formation, long-run risk and idiosyncratic income risk. None has fully convinced the field.
