Why do some species not age?

Category: Biology

Status: Queued

Hydra, naked mole-rats, certain whales and clams show negligible senescence — mortality risk does not increase with age. Understanding what allows these species to escape ageing could rewrite gerontology.

Candidate factors include indefinite stem-cell proliferation, highly efficient DNA-repair, and absence of certain hormonal signals. The genetic basis is still being mapped.
